EXAMPLES FROM DOCUMENTED SUBMISSIONS
LANDMARK EXPERIMENT PROVES FAMILY THERAPY INEFFECTIVE
During the early 1980s, The Family Institute of Virginia conducted a landmark experiment to determine whether or not family therapy was effective. The federally funded experiment conducted pre and post intervention measures on over 3,000 variables for a control group and three experimental groups. Videotaped interventions for the three experimental groups were conducted by hand-picked therapists representing the theoretical approaches of Virginia Satir, Murray Bowen, and David Haley. Data analysis indicated no statistically significant difference between the experimental group and all three of the experimental groups. The results clearly demonstrated that family therapy was ineffective. Over $750,000 in federal funds were expended on the experiment. In violation of federal funding guidelines and law, no final report was apparently ever written. The results were never published in any professional journal.
